In a sharp rebuke, senior Democrat and former US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel has accused President Donald Trump of jeopardising four decades of strategic progress between the United States and India in pursuit of personal glory. Emanuel claimed that Trump’s “obsession” with winning the Nobel Peace Prize led him to undermine vital diplomatic ties with New Delhi while simultaneously cosying up to Pakistan for political and financial gain.
Emanuel, who served as White House Chief of Staff under former US President Barack Obama, said Trump “threw away 40 years of meticulous strategic planning” aimed at strengthening ties with India. He alleged that Trump’s insistence on being publicly credited for the India-Pakistan ceasefire strained relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and risked destabilising South Asia.
“He threw it all away because Modi would not say that the President deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for the ceasefire with Pakistan,” Emanuel said during a televised commentary. According to him, Trump’s demand that Modi praise him for brokering peace between the two nations was “diplomatic vanity at its worst,” revealing how personal ambition could interfere with foreign policy.
Emanuel noted that India maintained the ceasefire decision was an independent move, made after discussions with Pakistan’s military leadership, not due to Trump’s intervention. However, the trump has repeatedly claimed credit, asserting he pressured both countries into agreement by threatening economic tariffs.
Allegations Of Financial Links To Pakistan
Emanuel also raised serious concerns about Trump’s growing proximity to Pakistan, alleging potential financial connections involving his family. He claimed that Trump’s son was “getting money from Islamabad” and that both Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, along with Jared Kushner, were linked to a Pakistani firm tied to cryptocurrency operations.
Emanuel suggested that Trump’s approach to Pakistan was driven by both “ego and profit,” hinting at possible conflicts of interest influencing US policy in the region.
The Democratic leader warned that Trump’s actions could have long-term consequences for US alliances in the Indo-Pacific region, where India plays a crucial role in counterbalancing China’s influence. “When personal recognition becomes a priority over national interest, diplomacy suffers,” Emanuel stated.
