Pakistani doctor UK sex-scandal: A senior Pakistani-origin anaesthetist has admitted before a UK medical tribunal that he left a patient under anaesthesia midway through a gall bladder surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another operating theatre. The incident took place on September 16, 2023, at Tameside General Hospital in Greater Manchester. The doctor, Dr Suhail Anjum (44), was later caught in a compromising position by a scrub nurse.
Doctor Caught In “Compromising Position”
According to reports in the BBC, Dr Anjum was the consultant anaesthetist overseeing five operations that morning. During the third surgery, he told colleagues he needed a comfort break, leaving an anaesthetic nurse in charge. Instead, he went into another theatre where he was discovered with a nurse, referred to as Nurse C. A colleague, identified as Nurse NT, said she entered the operating theatre to fetch equipment and found the doctor tying his trousers while the nurse had her trousers lowered. She immediately reported the matter.
Personal Trauma Cited As Factor
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) in Manchester heard this week that Dr Anjum admitted he had engaged in “sexual activity” with Nurse C while a patient remained unconscious under anaesthesia. “It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame. I let down everybody, my patient, my colleagues, and the hospital trust,” Dr Anjum told the panel, as quoted by The Independent. He further said, “But most importantly, the patient. If my doctor had gone away without telling me… this breaks me to pieces every day when I think about it. I wish I could reverse it.”
Defending himself, Dr Anjum cited a difficult personal phase. His youngest daughter was born prematurely in January 2023, and his wife suffered trauma during childbirth. “My wife had a very traumatic delivery; it was quite a stressful experience. We failed to connect as a couple during that time,” he told the tribunal. He added, “This was a unique incident. I am genuinely sorry and fully recognise the seriousness of my behaviour. I would like the opportunity to put this right.”
Doctor Returned To Pakistan
According to India Today, Dr Anjum left Tameside Hospital in February 2024 and later worked briefly in Liverpool before returning to Pakistan. A graduate of the University of Health Sciences, Lahore (2004), he has been practicing in the UK since 2011. Despite the controversy, he expressed a desire to return to the UK to resume his medical career. “I am passionate about my job. This was a lapse of judgment, and it will never happen again,” he assured the tribunal.
The tribunal was informed that while the patient under anaesthesia was not harmed during the brief absence, the risk posed was “serious and unacceptable. Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council, said, “There is no dispute that he indicated to the anaesthetic nurse he was going to the bathroom. But instead, he was found in a compromising position.”
