Louvre Museum robbery news: A sense of panic gripped the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday morning after reports of a robbery surfaced, prompting authorities to evacuate the premises and close the museum for the rest of the day. France’s Culture Minister RachidaDati confirmed the incident in a statement posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), saying, “A robbery took place this morning at the opening of the Louvre Museum. No injuries to report. I am on site alongside the museum teams and the police. Investigations are underway.”
The Louvre Museum, home to some of the world’s most valuable art treasures including Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, announced that it would remain closed for “exceptional reasons”. The museum did not specify what was stolen or the extent of the loss.
What Was Stolen?
According to a report by AFP, the robbers allegedly fled the museum with jewellery, though authorities have not yet disclosed what specific items were stolen or their value. Speculation has been circulating online, but authorities have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information. Museum officials reiterated that “no one was harmed” during the incident and that all visitors were safely evacuated. The Louvre’s management expressed gratitude to the Paris police for their prompt response.
Witnesses reported scenes of chaos and confusion as alarms were sounded and security officials quickly ushered visitors out of the museum. Police sealed off entry points around the glass pyramid entrance, and multiple emergency vehicles were seen stationed outside the premises. “No one knew what was happening at first, the staff just started asking people to move out quickly, “It was all very sudden, and everyone was scared because we thought it might be something serious, ” one visitor told local media.
Visitors and staff were quickly escorted out of the museum shortly after the incident was reported. Security personnel were seen sealing off entry points, while police and forensic experts arrived to examine the scene. French media reported heightened police presence in and around the museum’s iconic glass pyramid entrance. Authorities have not disclosed whether any suspects have been identified or detained.

The Louvre, established in 1793, attracts over 8 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited museums in the world. The last known major theft at the Louvre dates back several decades, making Sunday’s incident both rare and alarming.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review CCTV footage, question staff members present during opening hours, and analyze the museum’s internal security protocols. Police sources told local media that early findings indicate the theft occurred shortly after the museum opened to the public on Sunday morning. The Louvre has assured visitors that updates will be provided through official channels, while the French Culture Ministry has called for calm.
