PlayStation Network down: Thousands of PlayStation users were left frustrated on Monday evening after Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) suffered a major outage, blocking access to online gaming and essential network services. The disruption, which began around late afternoon, left users unable to sign in, play online, or access the PlayStation Store.
Outage-tracking platform DownDetector showed a sharp spike in complaints, with nearly 9,000 reports pouring in at the height of the crash. A majority of the reports, over 81 per cent pointed to server-related troubles, while others cited login failures and connectivity errors.
Players See WS-11649-5 Error On Screen
As the outage spread, users began sharing screenshots of the WS-11649-5 error message that popped up when they tried to connect. The code generally indicates a problem on Sony’s servers, although it can also appear during maintenance windows or temporary login issues.
Many frustrated players flooded social media with complaints and memes. “PlayStation servers going down right in the middle of my road to champ DPS,” one gamer wrote. Another user quipped, “PlayStation Network going down on a random Monday night as if the world wasn’t already messy enough.” Some questioned the timing of Sony’s maintenance schedule. “Who does maintenance on a Monday night at 9:30? That’s prime gaming time,” read another post.
Sony has not yet issued an official statement about the cause of the disruption. However, sources familiar with PSN operations suggested that the downtime could be linked to routine maintenance or a temporary backend failure.
Interestingly, Sony’s official service status page continued to show all systems as “operational,” even as thousands of players worldwide were unable to sign in.
Why The WS-11649-5 Error Occur?
The WS-11649-5 code often appears when:
•Account sign-in or authentication fails
•A mismatch exists between the account’s region and game content
•The PSN undergoes scheduled maintenance
•Corrupted cache or network data blocks login

What You Can Try At Home?
While users couldn’t do much during Monday’s downtime, a few troubleshooting steps can help once PSN stabilises:
• Restart both the console and router to reset connections.
• Check Sony’s PSN Service Status page for updates.
• Make sure your account region matches your console region.
• If issues persist, rebuild the database through Safe Mode.
• Try changing DNS settings to Google (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).
Many long-time PlayStation users expressed frustration over frequent network interruptions. “It’s always when I finally get a free hour that this happens,” one wrote, echoing the sentiment of thousands of others waiting for Sony’s servers to come back online.
