Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ongoing crisis in Nepal on Tuesday, expressing deep concern over the escalating unrest that has gripped the Himalayan nation. Speaking after returning from a day-long tour, Modi called the loss of young lives “heart-wrenching” and stressed that Nepal’s stability, peace, and prosperity are of utmost importance. He made a heartfelt appeal to the people of Nepal, urging them to maintain calm and public order amid the turmoil.

The crisis escalated after Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned following violent protests led by Nepal’s youth, many under 28 years of age. Demonstrators targeted government offices, including Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office, and set fire to the private residences of President Ram Chandra Poudel, Oli, and several former prime ministers. Initially sparked by a controversial social media ban, the protests quickly evolved into a broader anti-corruption movement, reflecting young Nepalis’ frustrations with nepotism and political dysfunction.

Nepal Army Takes Control Of Security
In response to the escalating unrest, the Nepal Army announced it would assume control of security operations starting at 10 pm. The Directorate of Public Relations and Information warned that “some groups are taking undue advantage of the difficult situation and causing severe damage to ordinary citizens and public property.” The Army added that all security agencies, including its own, would be fully mobilised if violent acts continue and urged citizens to cooperate in restoring order.
India has issued advisories to its nationals in Nepal, urging them to exercise caution and follow the instructions of Nepali authorities. The Kathmandu District Administration Office imposed a curfew effective from 8:30 am until further notice. Indian security forces also placed the 1,751-km India-Nepal border on heightened alert. Meanwhile, IndiGo and Air India suspended flights to and from Kathmandu due to the airport closure and prevailing security concerns.

Oli Steps Down To Allow Political Resolution
Prime Minister Oli, who began his fourth term in July last year, cited “extraordinary circumstances” in his resignation letter, stating that he stepped down “to facilitate the solution to the problem and to help resolve it politically in accordance with the Constitution.” Despite his resignation, unrest continued, leaving dozens injured and forcing the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport.
