PM Modi In Brazil: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome in Brasilia on Tuesday, being the first Indian Prime Minister in 57 years to make a State Visit to Brazil. The historic visit is a testament to India's increasing diplomatic outreach and its active role to reinforce the Global South's voice in determining an equitable world order. PM Modi received a warm welcome at the Alvorada Palace by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. A 114-horse guard of honour, both countries' national anthems, and a special Indian classical music concert highlighted the friendship between India and Brazil.

As he arrived at Brasilia airport, PM Modi was welcomed by the Batala Mundo band performing Afro-Brazilian traditional music, which set a vibrant cultural mood. People of the Indian diaspora came out in large numbers to greet him, waving the tricolour and cheering the Prime Minister. In a gesture of special respect, President Lula da Silva presented Brazil's top civilian honor, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross to Prime Minister Modi. Gracing the Brazilian leader, PM Modi said, "I wish to thank my friend, President Lula, for the warm welcome extended to us in Rio and Brasilia. The President awarding Brazil's highest honor on me is not only a matter of pride for me, but for 140 crore Indians. I assign this honor to our friendship and his strong commitment towards India." The two leaders held extensive discussions on multifaceted ties, including trade and investment, defence & security, health & pharmaceuticals, space, renewable energy, food & energy security, infrastructure development, digital public infrastructure, culture and people-to-people ties, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Trade Target of 20 Billion USD  to be Achieved in Next Five Years

PM Modi and President Lula reaffirmed their commitment to increase collaboration in major sectors. "We talked about increasing cooperation in all areas," PM Modi stated. Emphasizing economic relations, he stated, "We have planned to reach bilateral trade of USD 20 billion in the coming five years. Football is the heart of Brazil and cricket is the passion of Indians. Whether the ball crosses the boundary or is kept in the goal post, a relation of USD 20 billion is not impossible." President Lula stated that Brazil hopes to triple trade with India in the near future and emphasized Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer's strategy to increase its presence in India. He further sought increasing the preferential trade pact between India and the Mercosur group to decrease tariff and non-tariff barriers.

Energy, Environment And Defence: Pillars Of Strategic Partnership

PM Modi emphasised that environmental protection and clean energy are common concerns for both countries. 

"In the field of health, we are also expanding our win-win cooperation," he said. "Our collaboration in Artificial Intelligence and supercomputers is growing. This is a testament to our shared vision of inclusive development and human-centric innovation."
He said the bilateral cooperation in the field of energy is continuously growing. "Environment and Clean Energy are the main priorities of both countries. The agreement signed today to enhance cooperation in this field will provide new direction and momentum to our green goals," he added.

On defence, PM Modi stated, "Today, as the world navigates through a phase of tension and uncertainty, the India-Brazil partnership is a vital pillar of stability and balance," he said.He said that the growing cooperation in the field of defence is a symbol of deep mutual trust between India and Brazil. "We will continue our efforts to connect our defence industries,"

Zero Tolerance To Terrorism, Commitment to Diplomacy

With the world going through turmoil and geopolitical realignments, PM Modi pointed out that the India-Brazil relationship is a "pillar of stability and balance." Emphasizing mutual security interests, he explained, "Our approach to the war against terrorism is aligned, zero tolerance and zero double standards. Double standards on terrorism do not have any space. We condemn strongly terrorism as also those who encourage terrorism." He added that India and Brazil are “unanimous that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.”

PM Modi’s Brazil visit is part of his five-nation diplomatic tour that includes Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Namibia. The tour signals India’s commitment to reposition the Global South as active contributors in shaping global governance and co-authoring solutions for common challenges. Following the completion of his missions in Brazil, PM Modi will visit Namibia on July 9, where he is likely to address the Namibian Parliament.
