Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday had a phone call with Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the ongoing war between Iran, the US and Israel.
During the call, the prime minister expressed deep concern over the loss of civilian lives in the ongoing war and the rising hostilities.
PM Modi also discussed the safety and security of Indian nationals with Pezeshkian. The prime minister also emphasised the need for uninterrupted transit of goods and energy during the call.
Taking to X, Prime Minister Modi said, "Had a conversation with Iranian President, Dr Masoud Pezeshkian, to discuss the serious situation in the region. Expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure".
Urging for dialogue and diplomacy, he added, "The safety and security of Indian nationals, along with the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, remain India’s top priorities. Reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability and urged for dialogue and diplomacy".

The call is the first direct communication of the prime minister with top Iranian leadership in the wake of the escalation that started on February 28.
India has been iterating the importance of dialogue to resolve the issue and put an end to the conflict, which otherwise would cause a massive dent on West Asian and global economies.
Tehran has been responding to the joint strikes of the United States and Israel since day one, after its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes on February 28.
PM Modi's conversation with the Iranian President came after India co-sponsored a resolution pushed by Bahrain in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), condemning attacks against Gulf countries and Jordan.
The resolution passed by 13 votes called the attacks "egregious." The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday held a press conference on the West Asian crisis.
During the press meet, he reiterated India's stand, condemning the targeting of civilians, including the girls in an Iranian school in Minab.
Moreover, the MEA spokesperson also told the media that Minister of External Affairs, Dr S Jaishankar, held three telephonic conversations with his Iranian counterparts, pertaining to the safety of shipping and India's energy security.
