The White House on Saturday informed that US President Donald Trump will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in France on the sidelines of the G7 Summit. The meeting is expected to take place amid recent incidents involving attacks on ships carrying Indian crew members near the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman. 

The vessels MT Marivex, Settebello, and MT Jalveer, carrying Indian sailors on board, were struck by the US military over the past three days, resulting in the deaths of three Indian nationals. The US CENTCOM had confirmed the attacks, alleging that the vessels were violating its ongoing blockade on Iranian ports. The Trump-Modi meeting will also be their first in-person interaction since the recent India-Pakistan conflict. PM Modi and Trump last met on February 13, 2025, during Prime Minister’s official working visit to the White House in Washington DC.

PM Modi To Attend G7 Summit

While the two leaders have not met face-to-face since then, they have remained in contact through official diplomatic channels and phone conversations. PM Modi is on a visit to France and Slovakia from June 13 to June 18, with the G7 Summit set to be the key highlight of his trip. In his departure statement, PM Modi said India's presence at the G7 reflects the trust its partners place in the country and its rising global profile. This is the 8th consecutive G7 Summit to which India has been invited.

PM Modi's France Visit

"I am confident that my visits to France and the Slovak Republic will reinforce India's deepening engagement with both Europe and the G7, and showcase our steadfast commitment to expanding the horizon of our partnerships with the continent and beyond," PM Modi said. He emphasised that his visit to France will focus on strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two countries. PM Modi added that the trip would also help deepen India's strategic partnership with the European Union.

During the visit, PM Modi will jointly inaugurate the Bharat Innovates programme with French President Emmanuel Macron. The event, being held as part of the India-France Year of Innovation, aims to connect India's most promising startups with global investors and boost innovation emerging from the country's higher education ecosystem.

First Meeting After India-Pakistan Conflict

Last year, PM Modi and Trump were expected to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in June. However, the meeting could not take place as Trump returned to the US earlier than planned. Following this, the two leaders held a phone conversation on June 17, 2025 at Trump's request. The call lasted around 35 minutes and marked their first direct interaction since the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

During the conversation, Trump had expressed condolences over the victims of the Pahalgam attack and reaffirmed his support for India's fight against terrorism. PM Modi, in turn, briefed the US President in detail about Operation Sindoor and its objectives, according to the Ministry Of External Affairs (MEA) press release.
