On one side of Francis' coffin in the vast St. Peter's Square sat US President Donald Trump, who had clashed with the pope on certain issues. On the other side sat cardinals who must decide if Francis' successor should continue with his push for a more open Church or cede to conservatives who want to return to a more traditional papacy.

POPE FRANCIS (2013-2025)

Pope Francis was the first non-European pope in 1,300 years. He changed the face of the modern papacy more than any predecessor by shunning much of its pomp and privilege.

BENEDICT XVI (2005-2013)

An uncompromising theological conservative, Benedict's eight-year papacy was marked by missteps and a leaks scandal. Cardinals chose him from among their number seeking continuity and what one called "a safe pair of hands."

JOHN PAUL II (1978-2005)

The Polish Cardinal became the first non-Italian pope in 455 years in 1978. He lived through an assassination attempt and the fall of the Soviet Union. Years after his death, questions remained about whether he did enough against sexual abuse.

JOHN PAUL I (1978)

Pope John Paul I reigned for only 33 days in 1978.

PAUL VI (1963-1978)

Pope Paul VI headed the Church through the 1960s when many priests left religious orders and vocations to the religious life fell sharply in the turbulent era of social change. He is perhaps best known for enshrining the Church's ban on artificial birth control in 1968.
