Modi-Putin Meeting: In a strong reaffirmation of Moscow’s energy partnership with New Delhi, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said Russia is prepared to ensure “uninterrupted fuel supplies” to India. He also added that Moscow remains fully committed to meeting the energy needs of the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
His remarks came after wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit held in New Delhi. At Hyderabad House, the two leaders reviewed ties across strategic, economic, and cultural domains and oversaw the signing of multiple agreements.
Putin’s Big Assurance: “Ready for Uninterrupted Fuel Shipments”
Reaffirming energy as the cornerstone of the relationship, President Putin said Russia stands prepared to ensure steady deliveries of crude oil, petroleum products, and other energy resources. “We are ready to continue uninterrupted shipments of fuel for the growing Indian economy,” he stated, noting that Moscow had already emerged as one of India’s top suppliers.
Putin added that several agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation were signed during the summit. He highlighted that the two countries were steadily shifting towards national currency settlements, with 96 per cent of commercial payments now being made in non-dollar terms.

The Russian presented a projection that India–Russia trade, which touched USD 64 billion last year, could be pushed to USD 100 billion in the near future. He also underlined progress in the nuclear energy partnership, saying three of the six reactors at what will become India’s largest nuclear power plant have already been connected to the grid.
India and Russia inked multiple agreements covering migration and mobility, health, food safety, and port and shipping cooperation. Both sides formalised an economic cooperation programme aimed at expanding and diversifying trade till 2030, while work continues on a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union.
Putin said Moscow was collaborating with New Delhi on new international logistics routes, including the North–South Transport Corridor, and expressed readiness to explore new areas such as small modular reactors, floating nuclear plants, and advanced defence technologies.
Modi Calls Ties ‘Steadfast Like Pole Star’
Prime Minister Modi described the summit as significant, saying President Putin’s visit came at a time when bilateral relations were “passing through several historic milestones.” He said the India–Russia friendship had remained “steadfast like a pole star” over eight decades, regardless of global upheavals.
PM Modi emphasised that both nations were prioritising economic expansion, critical mineral supply chains, shipbuilding partnerships, and long-term energy cooperation. He reaffirmed India’s consistent position on the Ukraine conflict, saying New Delhi had always supported efforts for a peaceful resolution.
Putin also praised India’s leadership in BRICS and said Russia would support New Delhi when it assumes the chairmanship next year. He noted that the defence partnership remained robust, recalling Moscow’s decades-long contribution to modernising India’s armed forces. Both leaders expressed confidence that the summit’s outcomes would deepen the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” and strengthen their ability to navigate global challenges together.
