Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a 95-minute video call on January 21 to discuss key global issues, including their approach to building ties with newly inaugurated US President Donald Trump, prospects for resolving the Ukraine conflict, and Moscow's strong support for Beijing's position on Taiwan.
During the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the “no limits” partnership declared in February 2022, shortly before Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The strategic alliance, which has alarmed Western powers, emphasizes mutual support in reshaping global power dynamics.
Putin described China as an “ally” and emphasised their shared vision for a “more just multipolar world order”. Xi echoed this sentiment, stressing their joint efforts to ensure security across Eurasia and the world.
Engaging With Trump Administration
Putin and Xi signalled a readiness to establish constructive relations with the United States under Trump’s leadership. Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov stated, “Both leaders indicated a willingness to build relations with the United States on a mutually beneficial, mutually respectful basis if the Trump team really shows interest in this.” Moscow also expressed openness to dialogue with the US regarding the Ukraine conflict, signalling potential diplomatic overtures.
