Russian President Vladimir Putin struck a personal and cordial note during his bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China. In his opening remarks, Putin addressed Modi as “Mahamahim Pradhanmantri ji” (Honourable Prime Minister) and “priya dost” (dear friend), underlining the warmth that has come to define India-Russia ties.

In a symbolic gesture of friendship, the two leaders shared a ride in a Russian-made Aurus sedan from the SCO summit venue to the Ritz-Carlton hotel. Reports suggest that Putin waited nearly 10 minutes for Modi so that they could travel together. The camaraderie extended beyond symbolism, as both leaders continued their discussions inside the car for over 45 minutes before formally sitting down for an hour-long meeting.

Modi later posted about the exchange on X, describing it as “insightful,” while also sharing pictures of the warm interactions. Earlier in the day, the leaders had embraced at the summit venue, with the images of their hug quickly going viral on social media.

During their discussions, Modi stressed that India and Russia have always “stood shoulder to shoulder even in the most difficult situations.” He described the relationship as a “special and privileged strategic partnership”, adding that cooperation between the two nations is vital not just for their people but for global peace, stability, and prosperity.

On Ukraine, Modi reiterated India’s consistent stance of dialogue and diplomacy. “We have been continuously discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. We welcome all the recent peace efforts. A way must be found to end the conflict as soon as possible and establish lasting peace. This is the call of entire humanity,” he said. The talks covered a broad range of subjects, including energy cooperation, defence collaboration, and global geopolitical challenges.

Strategic Context

The Modi-Putin meeting comes at a time when India’s ties with the United States face strains over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil and stalled negotiations on a bilateral trade deal. In contrast, India and Russia recently announced an agreement on the terms of reference for a free trade pact between New Delhi and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
