Putin India Visit: As Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Delhi on Thursday for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, one name making headlines is Abhay Kumar Singh, a Patna-born doctor-turned-businessman who became the first person of Indian origin to be elected as a lawmaker in Russia.

Bihar-Born Russian Lawmaker Grabs Limelight

Born and raised in Bihar’s capital, Abhay Singh studied at Loyola High School, Patna, before leaving for Russia in 1991 to pursue medicine at Kursk State Medical University. After graduating, he briefly returned to Patna to practise as a doctor, but soon felt the conditions weren’t right. He went back to Kursk, entered the pharmaceutical business, and later expanded into real estate.

Abhay Kumar Singh’s Political Journey

His journey took a remarkable turn when he joined President Putin’s ruling United Russia party and won a seat in the Kursk regional legislature, a historic first for any Indian-origin candidate in Russia. "I am from Bihar, and politics runs in our DNA,” Abhay Singh famously told Russian media with a smile.

During Putin’s ongoing two-day visit, the lawmaker has been vocal about the strategic importance of India-Russia ties. He has strongly advocated that India should acquire Russia’s latest S-500 air defence system and has repeatedly stressed Moscow’s unwavering support for New Delhi.

”As Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted President Putin a Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita on Thursday, Abhay Kumar Singh has emerged as a living symbol of the deep people-to-people connect between the two nations – a boy from the banks of the Ganga who now helps shape policy on the banks of the Volga.
