Russia on Monday announced that it has granted political asylum to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who fled Syria after rebels overthrew his regime, as reported by news agency AP. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin made the decision to offer asylum to Assad, who had resigned from his position on Sunday.
Peskov also said that Putin was not planning to meet Assad. He did not comment on Assad’s whereabouts. Bashar al-Assad’s regime came to an end just 11 days after a surprise attack by rebel forces.
This occurred more than 13 years after Assad's brutal suppression of anti-government protests sparked the onset of Syria's civil war. The conflict, which had become largely inactive in recent years, was reignited by the rebels' unexpected offensive.
Syrians flooded the streets in celebrations following a dramatic rebel advance that brought an end to the Assad family's more than fifty years of rule. Syrian capital Damascus witnessed scenes of euphoria as large crowds gathered in central squares, waving the revolutionary flag.
Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the leader of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), praised the group's recent victory as "historic for the region" during a speech at the iconic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Sunday.

Amid political upheaval in Syria, Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali confirmed that he remains at his residence in Damascus and is dedicated to maintaining the operation of public institutions. Despite claims from rebel forces that no harm will come to their rivals, they have stated that public institutions will stay under the control of the former prime minister until a transition occurs.

A day after the fell of Assad's regime, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a statement said that India advocates for a peaceful and “inclusive Syrian-led political process" that takes into account the aspirations of all sections of the society.
