US President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday that he held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, discussing Ukraine’s escalating drone strikes on Russian territory and the nuclear threat posed by Iran. The call, which reportedly lasted around an hour and 15 minutes, comes as both global and regional tensions intensify.

In a Truth Social post, Trump quoted Putin as saying he would be forced to respond to Ukraine’s drone attacks, particularly those targeting Russian airbases. “President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields,” Trump noted. He added that although the discussion was constructive, it would not immediately result in peace. “It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate peace,” Trump said.

Talks On Iran’s Nuclear Program

The leaders also addressed concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump said he warned Putin that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” and claimed the two agreed on that point. He further stated, “President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion.” Trump expressed frustration at what he called Iran’s delay in making a definitive decision on the issue.

The phone call followed a series of high-profile Ukrainian strikes on Russian targets. Under its "Operation Spider Web," Ukraine launched drone attacks on five Russian airbases, some located hundreds, even thousands, of kilometres from the Ukrainian border. Just a day earlier, Ukrainian forces claimed to have damaged a key bridge connecting mainland Russia to the occupied Crimean peninsula.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Despite ongoing backchannel talks between Russian and Ukrainian officials, there is little indication that a ceasefire is imminent. Trump has voiced increasing concern over the trajectory of the war. Last week, he accused Putin of “playing with fire” and described the Russian leader as having gone “absolutely CRAZY!” after a barrage of missile strikes on Ukrainian cities.
