Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to make his visit to India in December this year to strengthen the bilateral relations, a Kremlin aide confirmed while talking to reporters.

It will be the first visit of President Putin to India after the war broke out with Ukraine in 2022. Kremlin Aide Yuri Ushakov told the media that the Russian President will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China's Tianjin on Monday.

During the meeting, the discussions will unfold over the preparation for his December visit. This comes after NSA Ajit Doval, last month, confirmed that the Russian President would visit India, even though the dates were not finalised at that time. “We have got a special, long relationship and we value this relationship," he had said.

Besides, back in April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had also confirmed President Putin's visit to New Delhi. He had said that te preparations for the visit were in progress.

Tariffs, war and global trade make visit crucial

The visit was announced in the wake of 50 per cent tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian imports over New Delhi's purchase of the Russian crude oil.

In the wake of the tariffs on several countries, the global trade is facing the heat. The US has imposed an additional 25 per cent tariffs on India after an announcement of same tariff, citing its continued purchase of Russian oil.

The Trump administration has seen India's strategic standing on oil purchase as a means of financing Russia in a protracted war with Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Trump met with Putin in Alaska, which was widely projected as a key meeting in the direction of ending the war. However, it didn't yield much.

Soon after the meeting, the Russian President called the heads of all its major ally nations, including PM Modi, and apprised them of the Alaska meeting.

During the telephonic conversation, PM Modi reaffirmed India's stand for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. Moreover, a number of issues of bilateral importance were also discussed.
