A former FBI agent has made explosive claims that Russian intelligence targeted billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk using sex, drugs, and his party lifestyle in an attempt to exploit him for geopolitical gain. The accusation was made by Jonathan Buma, a former FBI agent with 16 years of service, in a recent documentary aired by German broadcaster ZDF.
According to Buma, Russian intelligence agencies identified Musk’s affinity for ketamine, his indulgence in the desert party scene like Burning Man, and his fondness for adult entertainment as vulnerabilities. These habits made Musk, now an informal adviser to President Donald Trump, a high-value target for manipulation.
“Musk’s susceptibility to promiscuous women and drug use, particularly ketamine, was seen by Russian intelligence as an opportunity for an agent to exploit,” Buma said. He added that the plan was to infiltrate Musk’s social circles through agents who could take advantage of his personal weaknesses.
Did Putin Approve The Plot?
Buma further claimed that the operation had the approval of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The agents would not have gotten involved in the blackmail plot had the Russian president not known about the action and approved it.”
Musk’s reputation has taken several hits in recent years. His companies, particularly Tesla, have faced financial headwinds, and his increasingly public alignment with Donald Trump has drawn both praise and criticism.
In 2024, Musk became more openly critical of Ukraine, aligning himself with Trump’s foreign policy, which questioned continued US support for Kyiv. Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that Musk has been in direct contact with Putin since at least 2022.
From Campaign Donations To Government Advisory Role
After donating an unprecedented USD 288 million to Trump’s election campaign, Musk was appointed to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory group formed by Trump to identify waste and fraud in the federal government.
Last week, Musk joined Trump on a Middle East diplomatic tour. The two arrived in a Cybertruck-led motorcade and attended a formal dinner with the Emir of Qatar. Buma was indicted in March for leaking classified information to a publisher and is currently out on USD 100,000 bail.
