What began on February 24, 2022, as a "special military operation" has now ground into a four-year war of attrition with no end in sight. This conflict has earned the dark distinction of being Europe’s deadliest since the fall of Nazi Germany. While the toll in human life is staggering, the front lines remain largely stagnant. Main aim of war was to capture Ukraine's Donetsk and Donbass regions.
Last month, the war hit a symbolic mark: 1,418 days. This is the exact duration of the Soviet Union's struggle against the Nazis in World War 2. Yet, unlike the rapid territorial shifts of the 1940s, Russia’s modern military has found itself bogged down. Over the last two years, Russian troops have managed to push only about 30 miles into the Donetsk region, an advance described by NATO leadership as "snail-paced."
In a recent interview to CNN, Zelenskyy told that Ukrainians are exhausted by the conflict. But giving in to Putin’s demands is simply not an option, he said.
“We can’t just give him everything he wants. Because he wants to occupy us. If we will give him all he wants, we will lose everything — all of us, people will have to run away or be Russian.”
Casualties In War
The true cost of the war is hidden behind state secrets, but independent analysts provide a horrifying picture:
- Russian military casualties at 1.2 million, including 325,000 killed.
- Ukrainian troop casualties at up to 600,000, including up to 1,40,000 killed.
Civilian Suffering: The UN confirms over 15,000 civilian deaths, though the ruins of cities like Mariupol likely hide many more.
- Nearly 6 million people are living as refugees outside Ukraine, while millions more are displaced within their own borders.
Drones And "Glass Battlefield"
This war has changed how humanity fights. For the first time, drones have made the battlefield transparent. It is now impossible for either side to hide troop movements. Ukraine initially used drones to offset Russia’s heavy artillery, but Moscow has retaliated with fiber-optic drones that cannot be jammed, creating a 30-mile "dead zone" along the trenches.
The "Trump Factor" And Diplomatic Deadlock
The return of Donald Trump to the White House in 2025 has added a layer of uncertainty. In February 2026, the world watched as tensions boiled over during a meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, where the threat of cutting off US aid was used as leverage.
