Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday announced a three-day ceasefire in the ongoing war with Ukraine next month, in observance of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union and its allies' victory in World War II.
The ceasefire, lasting 72 hours, will begin on May 8 and end on May 10.
"The Russian side is declaring a ceasefire during the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, from midnight on May 7-8 to midnight on May 10-11. All combat operations will be suspended during this period," the Kremlin said in a statement.
The Kremlin has called on Ukraine to join the ceasefire as well. However, if Ukraine violates the ceasefire, Russia’s military has stated it will respond with an effective measure.
"Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations by the Ukrainian side, Russia's armed forces will give an adequate and effective response,” it added.
Ukraine is yet to comment on this development.
Earlier, Putin announced a 30-hour ceasefire during the Easter weekend. However, it was not successful as both sides accused each other of violations.
The development came as US President Donald Trump continued his efforts to mediate a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused to agree to a full and unconditional ceasefire. He insists that any ceasefire must include a stop to Western arms deliveries to Ukraine and a halt to Ukraine's military mobilisation.
Earlier, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky were seen having a serious conversation at St. Peter's Basilica, shortly before Pope Francis's funeral. According to the White House, their 15-minute meeting was described as "very productive."
Following the meeting, Trump expressed doubts about Putin’s commitment to ending the conflict. He said he was concerned that Putin might be stringing him along in peace efforts, especially after recent Russian missile attacks on Kyiv.
