Hajj 2026: Saudi Arabia has launched a large-scale security operation for the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage, which is taking place amid regional tensions linked to the Iran conflict. The county has deployed air defence systems, military units, and emergency response teams across holy sites like Makkah and Madinah. The measures have been taken to ensure the safety of pilgrims during one of the world’s biggest religious gatherings.

Saudi Enhances Hajj Security

The Saudi Ministry of Defence has shared videos showing air defence systems positioned near key pilgrimage areas. According to officials, these systems are ready to detect and stop any possible aerial threats over the holy cities to protect pilgrims. Saudi Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef also reviewed the readiness of security and emergency forces in Makkah ahead of the 2026 Hajj season.

What Measures Have Been Taken?

The government said all military, civilian, and medical teams have completed preparations to manage security and support pilgrims during the rituals. According to the defence ministry, the operation includes land forces such as special military police and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) defence units. These teams will help manage crowds, secure entry points around the Grand Mosque, and respond quickly to any emergency situation.

The security plan also includes aerial surveillance, helicopters, armoured vehicles, and mock drills for evacuation, firefighting, and counterterrorism. These exercises were reportedly shown during the annual Hajj security parade, which featured police, border guards, traffic units, and emergency medical teams.

When Is Hajj?

This year’s Hajj is scheduled from May 25 to May 29 and is expected to bring around 1.5 million pilgrims from around the world. The operation is taking place at a time of heightened regional instability, making security preparations more intense than in previous years.

What Indian Pilgrims Need To Know

For Indian pilgrims, this means authorities are taking extra precautions to ensure safety throughout the journey. Indian officials are likely to stay in close coordination with Saudi authorities. Pilgrims may experience stricter security checks, more monitoring at holy sites, and well-organised crowd management to ensure a smooth Hajj experience.
