  2. Video captured dramatic moment from inside the aircraft.
  3. Rough waters blamed for incident; investigation is ongoing.

A scary video captured the moment a seaplane carrying eight people made a hard landing in New York City’s East River, leaving the aircraft partially underwater. The footage, recorded from inside the plane, shows the Kodiak 100 hitting the choppy water as it tried to land at the Skyport terminal near 23rd Street and FDR Drive.

A loud bang was heard as the plane first struck the water. Passengers gasped in shock, and the plane was violently shaken by the waves. Passengers inside braced themselves as the aircraft bounced up and down before finally stopping. As soon as the ill-fated escaped the harrowing accident, nervous passengers had a laughter filled with nervousness and fear.

Passengers shocked after dramatic crash

“Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!” several passengers shouted as sirens blared nearby. With one wing partly submerged and the plane rocking in the water, the two pilots told everyone to stay calm and keep their life vests ready.

16-year-old Khloe Todd said her family was returning from a birthday trip in East Hampton when the incident happened. She described it as “a crash, a very bad one.” Her grandmother, Ada, was badly shaken by the impact and suffered swelling and pain in her ribs, back, and head. The family said they might need to go to the hospital.

“It was a crash, a very bad one,” the New York Post quoted Todd as saying. “She’s really not feeling well – her ribs, her back, her head. It’s all swollen. It’s all really bad so we might end up going to the hospital tonight,” Todd added.

Investigation underway

Emergency crews arrived quickly and rescued all passengers and pilots. At least two people had minor injuries. After everyone was safely off, the plane was turned upright and towed back to the dock.

The flight was operated by Acadian Seaplanes through Blade Air. The company blamed the hard landing on rough waters caused by Saturday night’s storm and waves from nearby boats and ferries.“There were a lot of ferries around, and there may have been wind at the last second,” the company said. “The waves they create can make landing difficult.” An investigation into the incident is still ongoing. This is the second seaplane incident on the East River in less than a month. In the previous case, another seaplane was also left struggling in the water after being hit by a wave during takeoff.
