In a rare and candid moment during India’s diplomatic outreach under Operation Sindoor, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor found himself facing a pointed question, not from a journalist or foreign diplomat, but from his own son, Ishaan Tharoor, a foreign affairs columnist with The Washington Post. The exchange, which took place at a Council on Foreign Relations event in New York on Thursday, quickly went viral after a video clip surfaced online.

As the Q&A session began, Ishaan stood up to ask his father a question. Tharoor, spotting him in the crowd, quipped, “That shouldn’t be allowed, that’s my son!" The moment quickly shifted in tone as Ishaan asked, "Have any of your government interlocutors during this tour asked for evidence of Pakistan's involvement in the Pahalgam attack?"

Tharoor Asserts India's Position

Tharoor answered his son’s question with a mix of seriousness and clarity. “Very simply, no one had any doubt, and we were not asked for evidence, though the media has, and you are speaking for your tribe,” he said. He emphasised that India’s actions were based on solid intelligence and proof.

“India would not have conducted Operation Sindoor without convincing evidence. We are not the kind of country that undertakes military action lightly,” he added.

Tharoor referenced a long history of terror attacks traced back to Pakistan. “We’ve seen a 37-year pattern of terrorism coming from Pakistan, always met with denials,” he said. He cited the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the Osama bin Laden incident, saying:
“Americans remember that Pakistan claimed not to know where bin Laden was, until he was found in a compound near a military base.”

Deliberate And Brutal Attack

He further explained that the April 22 Pahalgam attack was notably different from past incidents. “It was a sophisticated, planned assault with reconnaissance and cold-blooded execution. Terrorists asked people their religion before shooting them,” he revealed.

He also stated that in the past year alone, India faced 24 terror incidents linked to Pakistan, but none warranted a response on this scale. “We dealt with those incidents at the border or internally. This one crossed the line.”

Tharoor ended by reiterating India’s stand, “Pakistan will dispatch terrorists and deny it until caught red-handed. But this time, India responded—and we have the world’s understanding.”
