A dramatic mid-air mishap disrupted proceedings at Lane Stadium when a skydiver crashed into the venue’s giant scoreboard ahead of a spring football game, ABC News reported on Saturday. The shocking incident left spectators stunned and forced a delay in the event.
According to the report, the skydiver was part of a pre-game parachute display organised as part of the build-up to the Virginia Tech Hokies spring game. However, during the descent, the parachuter appeared to veer off course, likely due to shifting wind conditions, before colliding with the scoreboard structure and becoming entangled.

“We are waiting for EMTs to get him out of the board. Thank you for your patience,” read the statement on the stadium board.
Videos from inside the stadium quickly surfaced online, capturing the tense moments as the skydiver hung suspended from the structure, drawing gasps from the crowd. Stadium officials immediately halted pre-game activities as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Rescue teams launched a coordinated operation, using specialised equipment and safety harnesses to carefully bring the individual down. Authorities later confirmed that the skydiver was safely rescued and remained in stable condition, with no reports of life-threatening injuries.
Incident cause delay
The incident caused a delay of over an hour, as officials worked to secure the area and ensure spectator safety before allowing the game to proceed. Announcements inside the stadium thanked first responders for their swift action and urged calm among attendees.

While pre-game skydiving displays are not uncommon at major sporting events in the United States, the incident has once again raised questions about safety protocols and the risks involved in aerial stunts inside packed venues.
Despite the scare, normalcy was eventually restored, and the game went ahead, though the unusual incident remained the biggest talking point among fans both inside the stadium and across social media.
