Sydney witnessed a dramatic security breach on Monday when a 39-year-old man allegedly rammed his car into the gates of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Woollahra. The incident left two police officers with minor injuries and sparked a swift response from both New South Wales (NSW) Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
According to police reports, the suspect had parked a white SUV in the driveway of the consulate before suddenly accelerating and crashing through the front gates onto the property’s lawn. Eyewitness footage captured officers yelling, “Get out of the car now!” as the vehicle came to a halt near a large flagpole. Helicopter footage showed the car with smashed windows and its doors flung open.
The driver was quickly taken into custody without significant resistance and transferred to Surry Hills police station for questioning. He has since been charged with destroying property, possessing a knife, and other offences.

Police Response
NSW Police revealed that officers attempted to speak to the suspect before he rammed the gates. Witnesses described how police used batons to smash the vehicle’s windows in an effort to remove the man from the car. A 24-year-old constable sustained a hand injury during the confrontation and received treatment at the scene.
A local resident told the Sydney Morning Herald that he initially saw an officer aiming a handgun at the suspect before the car rammed the gates. “It was like watching an American reality show,” the witness recalled. “We thought this only happens in the US, not in Sydney.”
Consulate And Public Reaction
Despite the chaos, staff inside the Russian consulate remained unharmed. The mission temporarily closed its doors in the morning but resumed operations later. Individuals who had gathered for visa appointments confirmed the brief disruption.
Television footage broadcast by Sky News and Nine showed the vehicle abandoned beside the Russian flagpole, with significant window damage believed to have been caused by police batons.
