In a surprising turn of events, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, a group of remote and uninhabited volcanic islands in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean, have been included in the latest round of US trade tariffs. US President Donald Trump imposed a 10 per cent tariff on all trade partners, and despite the absence of any human residents, these Australian territories made it onto the list.
According to a report by Axios, the islands were included simply because they are considered part of Australia. During his speech, Trump presented a chart outlining the affected countries and territories, while printed sheets distributed to reporters claimed that Heard and McDonald Islands already impose a 10 per cent tariff on US goods due to "currency manipulation and trade barriers." The US, in response, applied "discounted reciprocal tariffs" at the same rate.
A Remote Territory Caught In Trade War
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are among the most isolated places on Earth. Accessible only by a two-week boat journey from Perth, Australia, the islands are covered in glaciers and home only to penguins and other wildlife. They have no human inhabitants and have not been visited by people in nearly a decade.
Despite their isolation, the islands were listed separately from mainland Australia in the White House’s official tariff announcement. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the unexpected development, stating, “Nowhere on Earth is safe.”
Mystery Of Exports From Uninhabited Land
Though it may seem absurd for a deserted island to face tariffs, trade data tells an interesting story. According to the World Bank, the United States imported USD 1.4 million worth of goods from Heard Island and McDonald Islands in 2022. Most of these imports fell under the category of “machinery and electrical” products, though it remains unclear what these goods actually were.
In the previous five years, imports from these islands ranged from as low as USD 15,000 to as high as USD 325,000 annually. Given the lack of infrastructure, human activity, or industrial production on the islands, the source of these exports remains a mystery.
During his speech, Trump used a large poster to illustrate the countries and territories affected by the new tariffs. The inclusion of Heard and McDonald Islands, along with details about their supposed trade barriers, led to widespread confusion.
