Iran on Tuesday issued a renewed threat to the United States, saying a fresh military offensive against it could accelerate its nuclear enrichment activities to 90 per cent, a weapon-grade enrichment.
The statement was issued by Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
Taking to social media platform X, Rezaei said, "One of Iran’s options in the event of another attack could be 90 per cent enrichment". He added that the step would be formally reviewed in the country's parliament.
The statement marks a fresh escalation in rhetoric as the US' entire campaign against Iran is based on an assertion to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Iran has already reached 60 per cent purity, and the US has been vehemently pressing Iran to shun the development of nuclear weapons to reach a permanent end to the hostilities as the month-old ceasefire between Iran, Israel, and the United States teeters on the brink of collapse.
Amid persisting diplomatic tensions between the two countries post-ceasefire announcement, Iran had submitted a proposal over the weekend in response to Washington's one-page memorandum, which was largely related to stopping Iran from expanding its nuclear programme.
In its proposal, Tehran sought a permanent end to military conflict and removal of the blockade to consider nuclear issues, sanctions and freeze Iranian assets at a later stage.
However, on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump rejected the peace proposal, claiming that the ceasefire is on life support and he is considering restarting the US Navy escort of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
"I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living," the US President said.
