In a move that has stirred new controversy in Washington, Republican Congressman Chip Roy from Texas has announced plans to introduce legislation that would impose a complete freeze on all immigration to the United States. The proposed bill, he said, seeks to halt immigration “until certain objectives are achieved,” including reforming chain migration, ending H-1B visas, revisiting birthright citizenship, and vetting immigrants for adherence to Sharia law.

Speaking on The Benny Show, hosted by conservative commentator Benny Johnson, Roy claimed that America faces a “massive Islamism problem” and argued that the proposed freeze would protect national security and preserve American values. “I’ve got a bill that I’m going to be introducing that is a freeze on all immigration. Freeze it until we achieve certain objectives, reforming chain migration, ending H-1B visas, getting birthright citizenship dealt with, and vetting people for their adherence to Sharia law,” news agency ANI quoted Roy as saying.

Immigration System ‘Broken’, Says Roy

Roy described the US immigration system as “broken” and called for a complete overhaul of legal and illegal migration frameworks. He said his proposal aimed to “stop the H-1B scam” and advocated a total ban on H-1B visas, which are widely used by skilled foreign professionals, particularly from India. “H-1Bs should be banned. There should be no H-1Bs in America,” he declared.

The Texas lawmaker, known for his strong conservative stance, also pushed for sweeping reforms in urban housing and education policies, blaming “college cartels” and “urban containment” for what he called the “destruction of the American dream.” Roy linked the decline in homeownership and marriage rates among young Americans to economic policies that, he claimed, have favoured immigrants and elite institutions over citizens. Roy’s proposal comes amid shifting immigration rhetoric within the Republican Party.
