Thailand has tightened its visa-free entry rules, a move that could disrupt the plans of travellers hoping for long backpacking holidays in the country.
The Thai Foreign Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the country is ending its 60-day visa-free stay policy for travellers from 93 countries and territories. The decision affects citizens from over 90 nations, including India, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, China, and countries in the 29-member Schengen zone.
Under the revised policy, travellers from nations such as the UK, the US, and Australia will now be allowed visa-free stays of only 30 days, while some visitors will have to apply for visas on arrival. The change effectively limits the extended stays that had become increasingly popular among tourists and digital nomads.
Earlier in 2024, the Thai government had eased visa restrictions in an effort to attract foreign tourists after the coronavirus pandemic severely impacted the kingdom’s tourism industry, a major pillar of its economy.
Known for its tropical beaches, limestone islands, and vibrant nightlife, Thailand continues to be among the world’s most visited travel destinations. However, authorities say the relaxed 60-day visa policy was increasingly being exploited by foreigners working illegally or engaging in criminal activities.

Why Did Thailand Change The Rules?
According to the Thai Foreign Ministry, national security concerns were one of the key reasons behind the decision.
In recent years, several incidents involving foreign tourists have drawn attention online, including cases of vandalism at temples, public misconduct, and drunken fights in tourist hotspots. Thai authorities have also arrested foreign nationals linked to drug smuggling and human trafficking networks.
Thailand has also seen a shift in its tourist demographics. Russian travellers became the country’s fourth-largest visitor group last year, after tourists from India, China, and Malaysia.
The country remained open to Russian passport holders even after Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, unlike several European nations that imposed stricter travel restrictions on Russian citizens. This contributed to a sharp rise in Russian arrivals.
At the same time, Thai law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned foreign nationals, including Russians, against overstaying their visas.
Separately, the Embassy of Israel in Thailand recently advised Israeli tourists visiting Phuket to strictly follow local laws and regulations. In a Facebook statement, the embassy cautioned that serious violations could result in local authorities revoking visas.
