A woman in Thailand has been sentenced to death for the murder of 14 of her friends using cyanide. 36-year-old Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn allegedly mixed the poison into the food and drinks of one of her wealthy friends during a trip last year. The death initially appeared to be from natural causes, but the relatives of the victims refused to accept this. They insisted on an autopsy, which revealed traces of cyanide in her body.
Upon investigation, police arrested Sararat and discovered a pattern of similar incidents dating back to 2015. Known in the media as "Cyanide Am," Sararat reportedly had a gambling addiction and targeted people to whom she owed money. She is also accused of stealing their jewellery and valuables.
In April 2023, Sararat travelled to Ratchaburi province with her friend Siriporn Khanwong, 32, where they participated in a Buddhist protection ritual at a river. After a meal together, Siriporn collapsed and died, with Sararat allegedly making no attempt to assist her.
Traces of cyanide were found in Siriporn's body, and her phone, money, and bags were missing. Police believe this incident is one of many in which Sararat used cyanide to murder those she targeted for financial gain.
Sararat, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges against her.
Besides, her former husband, a former police officer, and her lawyer were each sentenced to prison for their roles in helping her avoid prosecution. The ex-husband received a sentence of one year and four months, while the lawyer was handed two years. Both had pleaded not guilty before the sentencing on Wednesday.
Sararat has also been asked to pay compensation to Siriporn's family.
