The short-form video platform TikTok has resumed its services in the United States after Donald Trump, who is set to assume office as President today, promised to lift the ban on the app. This development comes just a day after TikTok was forced to shut down in the US due to "national security concerns." Besides, the order required TikTok's China-based parent company, ByteDance, to sever ties with the app's US operations.

In response to Trump’s assurance, TikTok issued a statement expressing gratitude to the US President-elect for "providing the necessary clarity and assurance," asserting that the company was working toward restoring its services.

“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States,” the company said in a post on X.

Notably, Trump said he wanted to give more time to TikTok to comply with federal orders. Additionally, he sought a 50 per cent ownership position for the US in a joint venture, asserting that its ‘valuation could surge to trillions’.

Trump had previously supported a ban on TikTok during his first term as US President. However, the orders were blocked by the courts. Later, Trump changed his stance, as the app was believed to have garnered a significant number of votes in his favour.
