The Trump administration can soon impose a ban on the citizens of Pakistan and Afghanistan from entering the US, citing security concerns. The decision was taken based on a government review of countries' security and risks, and the ban can be imposed as soon as the next week, Reuters reported, citing sources.
The sources also stated that apart from Pakistan and Afghanistan, the citizens from three other countries can also get banned from entering the US; however, they did not disclose the names of the countries. The move from the Trump administration is seen as an effort towards his immigration policies in which he stated that he will not allow any individual to enter into the country who can be a possible threat.
However, this is not the first time that the Trump administration has imposed a ban on any country. During his first tenure as the president, Trump had imposed a ban on travelers from seven majority-Muslim countries. The policy went through multiple iterations before it was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. However, Joe Biden, who succeeded Trump, repealed the ban in 2021 by calling it “a stain on our national conscience.”
Biden stated that the ban was against the foreign policies of America, adding that the doors of the country called "land of opportunities" cannot be closed for a few countries. With the Trump administration once again taking similar steps, the ban can affect thousands of Afghans who are residing there on special immigrant visas because they are at risk of Taliban retribution for working for the U.S. during a 20-year war in their home country.
"While no official announcement has been made, multiple sources within the U.S. government suggest a new travel restriction could be implemented within the next week," Shawn VanDiver, the head of #AfghanEvac, said in a statement.
