US Senator from Florida and longtime ally of President Donald Trump, Rick Scott on Tuesday questioned Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the US-Iran ceasefire discussions. He accused Islamabad of “hypocrisy” after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran.

US Senator Questions Islamabad’s Mediator Role

In a post on X, Scott criticised Sharif’s remarks praising Khamenei and raised concerns over Pakistan’s past record on terrorism and foreign policy. He said Pakistan’s role as a mediator should be viewed with caution. Scott also referred to Pakistan’s past controversies and accused Islamabad of supporting policies that conflict with US interests. He brought up the presence of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the country before he was killed in US strikes in 2011.

“We need to remember who Pakistan really is in the middle of all this. We’re talking about a country where bin Laden hid out for a decade, where they selectively enforce lopsided blasphemy laws to persecute Christians, and where the Prime Minister just praised the genocidal mass murdering tyrant that used to run Iran,” Scott wrote.

Scott Compares Pakistan With Qatar

Scott further compared Pakistan’s mediator role with Qatar’s involvement in international negotiations, questioning whether Islamabad was suitable for such a position. “They’re no better qualified to “mediate” this than the Hamas-harboring Qataris. Islamabad should take note; we’re watching closely,” he added.

The US Senator was reacting to comments made by Sharif while paying tribute to Khamenei during the funeral ceremony. The video, shared by Scott showed Sharif describing the Iranian leader as “a great scholar and leader whom millions of Muslims will remember.” Sharif also said, “Pakistan and Iran will march together under all circumstances.”

Meanwhile, Iran's Tasnim news agency, citing a senior source, reported that the US had carried out a diplomatic campaign to discourage countries from attending the funeral ceremony of Ali Khamenei, in Tehran.
