United States President Donald Trump in an interview with Fox News Radio has said that the secondary tariffs on India may have pushed Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet him. Trump’s remarks came ahead of a scheduled summit with Putin in Alaska on Friday, where he intends to address the Russia-Ukraine conflict directly. The possibility of additional US tariffs on India is looming large as the outcome of upcoming peace talks remains uncertain.

"Everything has an impact," Tump mentioned, saying that secondary tariffs against India "essentially took them out of buying oil from Russia."

"Certainly, when you lose your second largest customer and you're probably going to lose your first largest customer, I think that probably has a role," Trump said in the interview.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned that Washington could ramp up secondary tariffs on India if the war in Ukraine continues and diplomatic efforts fail. Trump on Wednesday issued a stern warning to Putin, stating that there would be “very severe consequences” if Russia does not agree to halt the ongoing war.

Earlier this month, President Trump announced the suspension of trade talks, citing India’s continued purchases of Russian oil and other undisclosed disputes. The US recently slapped a 25 per cent penalty on Indian imports, in addition to an extra 25 per cent tariff specifically targeting purchases of oil and weapons from Russia.

With total tariffs now at 50 per cent, India has strongly objected, calling the measures “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” India has defended its oil imports as essential for national energy security, highlighting that it needs to shield millions of poor citizens from rising fuel costs.
