US President Donald Trump reportedly received a chilling message from Iran warning of sleeper cell attacks inside the United States, shortly before he ordered a series of major airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, NBC News reported.
According to the report, Iran conveyed the threat through an intermediary, stating that if the US launched attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities, Tehran would activate sleeper cells already embedded in American society. Sleeper cells are covert groups of terrorists or spies living under deep cover, blending into local communities, often for years, until they are activated for an operation.
The warning reportedly came during the G7 Summit on June 16, held in Canada. Trump abruptly left the summit a day early, skipping meetings scheduled for June 17, stating only, "I have to be back, very important." When asked about the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, Trump refused to comment, saying, “I don’t want to talk about that.”

Operation Midnight Hammer
Less than a week later, on June 22, the US launched “Operation Midnight Hammer,” using powerful bunker-buster bombs to strike three key Iranian nuclear sites, Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. This marked one of the most significant American military operations against Iran since 1979.
Following the strikes, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a stark internal memo warning that the threat of sleeper cells or lone-wolf sympathisers has “never been higher.” According to the memo, “thousands of Iranian nationals have been documented entering the United States illegally, and countless more are likely among known and unknown gotaways.”
CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott reportedly stated, “Though we have not received any specific credible threats to share with you all currently, the threat of sleeper cells or sympathisers acting on their own, or at the behest of Iran, has never been higher.”
FBI Intensifies Surveillance Efforts
The FBI has also ramped up monitoring efforts, according to CBS News, under the direction of Director Kash Patel. Officials emphasised that while no specific attacks have been detected, the environment is highly volatile.
Vice President JD Vance addressed the threat during an appearance on Meet the Press, stating, “We’re prepared in the event that the Iranians do retaliate,” while also criticising the Biden administration’s immigration policies, which he claimed allowed potential threats to enter the U.S. unchecked.
