RNC News: Just days after an unsuccessful attempt on former US president Donald Trump's life, a masked man found in the possession of an AK-47 pistol was arrested near the site where the Republican National Convention (RNC) is being held in Milwaukee, media reports said. US-based Fox News said it received confirmation of the arrest directly from Milwaukee Police.
Besides the firearm, the suspect, who was wearing a ski mask, was also carrying a full magazine of ammunition in his tactical backpack, as per the report. He was reportedly arrested on Monday (local time). Prominent Republican leaders and officials are converged at Milwukee's Fiserv Forum for the party event, which is slated to last till July 18 (Thursday).
In a separate incident, police officers from the US state of Ohio posted in Wisconsin to secure the RNC gunned down on Tuesday a man who was wielding two knives near the venue for the Republican event, according to Milwaukee's police chief. However, officials, including the chief of staff for Milwaukee's mayor and a spokesperson for the RNC's joint command centre, said there was nothing to suggest that the incident was related to the convention itself, the Associated Press reported.
"Someone's life was in danger," Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said, adding, "These officers, who were not from this area, took it upon themselves to act and save someone's life today." The aforementioned incidents come days after Trump survived an apparent assassination bid at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The alleged shooter, a 20-year-old man, was neutralised by US Secret Service personnel at the scene.
