After nearly 39 days of conflict, the United States and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire. Announcing the agreement, US President Donald Trump called it a "big day for world peace". This development is significant because until recently, Trump had been threatening to send Iran back to the "Stone Age".
Trump said Iran now wants peace, and the world wants it too. He also stated that the ceasefire was conditional on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for about 20 per cent of the world's oil supply.
He also said in his statement that the US would play an active role in the region, facilitating shipping and assisting in Iran's reconstruction. Trump described this as the beginning of a "golden age" for the Middle East.

Trump’s 'Stone Age' Threat
Before the ceasefire, Trump had been quite aggressive. On April 1, he warned that the US would send Iran into the “Stone Age" and target its vital infrastructure.
He clearly stated that if a deal was not reached, Iran's power plants and other vital infrastructure would be attacked. His statement at that time clearly indicated the US's readiness for military action. Trump also stated that the US military would achieve all its military objectives very soon and that strong measures would be taken to achieve this.

Iran's Reply
Iran also took a tough stance in response to Trump's threats, stating that the war would continue until the US suffers permanent defeat and regret.
Iran's military spokesman, Ebrahim Zulfaghari, warned that the US should be prepared for even more severe and devastating attacks. This statement clearly indicated that tensions between the two countries had reached a boiling point and the situation remained extremely serious.
However, the two countries ultimately chose the path of dialogue and agreed on a two-week ceasefire. During this period, Iran's 10-point proposal will be discussed. This agreement will seek to open the Strait of Hormuz and bring stability to the region. This is also considered crucial for the global economy.
