US President Donald Trump on Tuesday presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Sergio Gor as the new United States Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, calling him “a trusted friend” who will “handle it better than anybody ever could.”

Gor was officially sworn in by Vice President JD Vance during a ceremony held in the Oval Office. The event was attended by top administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro. Erika Kirk, widow of Turning Point USA cofounder Charlie Kirk, was also among the guests.

Trump Praises Gor: '‘He’ll Handle It Better’

“Today we are thrilled to be here for the swearing-in of our next Ambassador to India, and Sergio will handle it better than anybody could,” Trump said, congratulating Gor during the ceremony. “I’m trusting him to strengthen one of our country’s most important relationships, the strategic partnership with the Republic of India.”

In his first remarks as ambassador, Sergio Gor expressed gratitude to President Trump for his trust and vowed to work toward repairing and strengthening US-India relations. “I look forward to enhancing the relationship between our two nations and building trust in a partnership that matters deeply to both sides,” Gor said. “This is one of America’s most vital foreign relationships, and I will do everything I can to take it forward.”

Sergio Gor, a seasoned political strategist and diplomat, was nominated by Trump in August and confirmed by the Senate in October. Before assuming his post, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval in New Delhi to discuss key issues, including defence cooperation, trade, and technology transfers.

Trump also hinted that the United States and India were “very close” to finalising a new trade deal, describing it as “fair and good for everybody.” “We’re making a deal with India, a much different deal than before,” Trump told reporters after the ceremony. “Right now, they don’t love me, but they’ll love us again. We’re getting a fair trade deal, and Sergio will have a big role in making that happen.”

Trump’s remarks come at a delicate moment for bilateral ties. Over the past few months, New Delhi and Washington have sparred over trade tariffs, market access, and India’s discounted oil purchases from Russia.

India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed Gor’s appointment but underscored the need for “mutual respect and balance” in addressing differences. “We appreciate the importance Washington attaches to this relationship,” Kwatra said. “We hope to work with Ambassador Gor to further deepen trust and expand cooperation.”
