A concerning account from an Indian student studying in the UK has sparked widespread debate on social media. In a Reddit post titled ‘UK Is a Trap for International Students – My Personal Experience’, the student, identified by the username @Due-Somewhere-1608, warned aspiring students to reconsider their decision before moving to the UK for higher education.
The student described the UK as an increasingly difficult environment for international students, citing financial struggles, lack of job opportunities, and the mental toll of trying to sustain a decent standard of living.
"If you’re considering coming here, please think twice—you might end up wasting your money, time, and energy. Many students force themselves into part-time jobs that barely support a decent quality of life," he wrote.
He also shared heartbreaking observations of his fellow students, stating that many who had completed their master’s degrees and extended their post-study visas had suffered significant physical and mental distress. “I’ve seen friends become extremely thin, lose their hair, and eventually return to India because they simply couldn’t cope,” he added.
Low Return On Investment
One of the biggest concerns raised by the student was the financial burden of studying in the UK, which he claimed does not offer a good return on investment.
According to him, studying in the UK is far less rewarding compared to a full MS degree in the USA or an MTech, ME, or MS in India. He argued that the high cost of education, combined with limited job prospects, makes the UK a risky choice for many Indian students.
“Please take my experience seriously. You might want to reconsider coming to the UK,” he urged. The student also pointed out that almost all of his peers had struggled to secure stable employment after graduation. He claimed that 99% of his friends had returned to India either after completing their MSc or after staying on a post-study work (PSW) visa.
