A man was arrested in Liverpool city centre on Monday evening after a car drove into a group of people celebrating Liverpool Football Club’s Premier League title. The incident occurred around 6 PM on Water Street, where large crowds had gathered to mark the team’s 20th league win.

The street was part of the official 10-mile trophy parade route, with thousands of supporters lining the roads to cheer on players and staff. The celebrations, which had begun earlier in the afternoon, took a sudden turn when a grey car appeared to drive into the crowd.

According to Merseyside Police, officers were alerted shortly after 6 PM following reports of a vehicle colliding with several pedestrians. The driver stopped at the scene and was immediately detained by police. Emergency services were quickly deployed and remained in the area throughout the evening.

A statement from the police confirmed: “Emergency services are currently on the scene. A male has been detained and enquiries are ongoing.”

Videos circulating on social media showed the moment the car moved into a packed area filled with fans, with many appearing visibly shocked. Footage from Reuters also captured emergency workers helping people into ambulances, with some being carried away on stretchers.

The North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it was assisting emergency responders and prioritising medical care for those involved. “We are working with other emergency services to assess the situation and make sure anyone injured gets help as soon as possible,” NWAS said.

Photos from the area showed police sealing off sections of the road and investigators examining the scene. Roads were littered with debris left behind from the parade.

The celebrations marked Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th top-flight league title. It was also their first public parade since the 1990 title win, as their 2020 victory was not marked with crowds due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper have been briefed on the incident, according to UK media reports. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
