Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Wednesday stated that law and order in Bangladesh continues to struggle. He pointed out that the country has an "extremely inefficient" police force, making the situation worse for the administrators. Gen Zaman further urged the countrymen to maintain the peace and cooperate with caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus.

While speaking at an armed forces function, Gen Zaman stated that the anarchy that Bangladesh is currently witnessing is because of its own making, adding that the armed forces have to play a key role as the law and order has collapsed. He also pointed out that the policemen in the country are not secure in their jobs as many of their peers are behind bars or facing serious charges.

Zaman further stated that "there is an urgent need for national unity and institutional discipline". He also stated that growing violence and hatred in society puts the country's sovereignty at immense risk. He also appealed to the countrymen to avoid the rumours and focus on keeping the unity of the country a priority.

"If you can't move beyond your differences and continue meddling and fighting among yourselves, and if you continue to injure and kill one another, the independence and integrity of the country will be at risk - I warn you," stated Gen Zaman, assuring that he has no further aspirations.

The remarks from Zaman came after key student protest leader Nahid Islam resigned from the ministry of the interim government ahead of an expected launch of a new party. Gen Zaman also stated that strong actions must be taken against the people trying to destroy the harmony and the national properties.

"Punishment must be ensured," he said. "Otherwise, we will be trapped in the same cycle," Zaman added. Bangladesh has faced massive violence and human rights violations since the ouster of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
