The US military on Thursday confirmed it disabled an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman after it allegedly violated restrictions related to Iranian oil transport. The vessel, identified as the Guinea-Bissau-flagged MT Jalveer, was targetted after it failed to comply with repeated instructions from US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces.

Why Was The Vessel Attacked?

Releasing the video, the CENTCOM stated that an aircraft fired two Hellfire missiles into the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to follow instructions from US forces. The vessel was attempting to move oil from Iran through the Gulf of Oman. "US forces disabled an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman at 11:20 p.m. ET on June 10 after the vessel violated the blockade against Iran by attempting to transport Iranian oil, marking the third commercial ship disabled by American forces this week," the statement noted.

Two Vessels Disabled

Earlier this week, US military also disabled two other vessels, inclduing Palau-flagged MT Marivex and MT Settebello on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Marivex was reportedly trying to sail to an Iranian port in violation of restrictions, while Settebello was allegedly involved in transporting Iranian oil.

CENTCOM said that since the beginning of the enforcement operation on April 13, it has disabled nine non-compliant vessels, redirected 135 ships that complied with instructions, and allowed 42 vessels carrying humanitarian aid to pass. The command also stated that the blockade is being enforced equally against vessels of all nationalities entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal waters, including those in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.

Attack On MT Jalveer

A maritime incident near the Oman coast had raised concern after reports said the commercial vessel MT Jalveer came under attack close to the Strait of Hormuz. Around 20 Indian sailors were reportedly on board the ship at the time of the incident. Authorities later informed that all the Indian seafarers are safe, and no injuries or casualties have been reported.

Additional Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Mukesh Mangal said, "The vessel has 20 Indian seafarers on board, and all of them are reported to be safe. No casualties or injuries have been reported."

He added, "As per the latest information, the evacuation of crew members to Shinas port has commenced. Six more are to be evacuated. The Ministry is closely monitoring the situation and is in continuous coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Missions abroad and the Indian Navy and other relevant stakeholders."
