US Labor Day 2025:The United States is preparing to celebrate Labor Day 2025 on Monday, September 1. This federal holiday honors the contributions and successes of American workers. Although the day includes celebrations, parades, and family picnics, it also means that most government offices, banks, and some services will be closed. At the same time, many retailers and essential stores will remain open, offering shopping opportunities and summer discounts.

Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September. In 2025, it falls on September 1, marking the unofficial end of summer and the start of school schedules for many families. The US Department of Labor describes the day as “an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers.” This tradition began in the late 19th century when labor unions and activists pushed for a federal holiday to acknowledge the important role of the workforce in building America’s strength and prosperity.

Are Banks And Stock Markets Open on Labor Day?

Financial markets will observe a holiday break. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and bond markets will be closed on Monday. Likewise, all major banks and branches throughout the country will also close down. Nevertheless, online banking services and ATM machines will function normally as ever, enabling customers to access vital services.

Will USPS, FedEx, And UPS Deliver Mail?

Postal and courier services will be curtailed as well. The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not be sending mail or packages, other than Priority Mail Express, which will be open. Privately-owned couriers UPS and FedEx will be halting most of their service for the day. UPS Express Critical and FedEx Custom Critical will continue to operate, but routine deliveries and pickups will not be made. FedEx Office locations will continue to operate with restricted hours.

Garbage Pickup And City Services

Trash pickup services in various cities in Ohio, such as Cincinnati, Columbus, Akron, and Canton, will be postponed by one day. Residents are requested to contact their municipal service providers for new schedules. State and local courts, public libraries, and federal offices like the DMV will be closed nationwide.

Retailers, Grocery Stores, And Pharmacies

For consumers, most retail outlets will be open on Labor Day. Here's the complete breakdown:
• Closed: Costco warehouses across the nation will not be open on September 1.
• Limited Hours: Aldi stores will operate on reduced schedules, and Whole Foods Market will maintain most outlets open with potential variations based on location.
• Open As Usual: Trader Joe's, Kroger, Pick 'n Save, Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Ralphs, Walmart, Target, and Home Depot will all be open during their normal hours.

Pharmacy access will vary. Walgreens stores will follow normal operating hours, but most of its pharmacies, except 24-hour and select locations, will remain closed. CVS stores and pharmacies will be open, although hours may differ depending on location.

Aside from closures, Labor Day parades and celebrations will also be observed throughout the United States. In Des Moines, Iowa, the Labor Day Parade every year will start at 11 a.m., going from the Iowa State Capitol and culminating at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. After the parade, union families will also have a picnic at Union Labor Park, also in time for the day's theme of solidarity. Both Americans also spend the three-day weekend traveling, having cookouts, and celebrating what will be the last major summer vacation before the onset of fall.

Labor Day is more than a holiday, but an affirmation of the hardships and triumphs of the American workforce. It celebrates millions of men and women whose labor still fuels the nation's economy. The holiday gives employees both praise and rest — an opportunity for workers to commemorate their triumphs while spending time with those they love.
