After over three weeks into the war, US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a five-day pause in attacks on Iranian energy sites and said that talks are underway between the US and Iran to prevent war.

Reacting to Trump's announcement, Iran rejected all claims of talks, saying that no talks had taken place, not even through an intermediary. Iran added that Trump was making such statements only to stabilise the energy market, as prices are constantly rising and the US is facing financial pressure.

After Iran's refusal, President Trump reiterated his claim, saying that Washington is set to hold negotiations with Iran on a 15-point proposal.

Speaking to reporters in Florida's Palm Beach, Trump said the negotiations had been productive despite communication challenges.

"We have had very, very strong talks. We'll see where they lead. We have major points of agreement. I would say almost all points of agreement. Perhaps that hasn't been conveyed. The communication, as you know, has been blown to pieces. They're unable to talk to each other," Trump added.

Who is Trump talking to in Iran?

Speaking to CNN, the US President said America was in touch with a top Iranian figure in efforts to end the war.

Without naming with whom the negotiations were taking place, he said, "We're dealing with the man who I believe is the most respected and the leader."

According to a report by Reuters, based on an Israeli official, Iranian Parliament Speaker Qalibaf, increasingly influential, was representing Iran and that talks on ending the war could be held in Islamabad as soon as this week.

Talks on 15-point agreement

There are 15 points of agreement between the US and Iran. Iran has agreed not to possess any nuclear weapons. Trump said that Washington will hold talks today over the telephone.

Trump said the US is also discussing leadership options for Iran, which could face a very serious form of regime change.

Donald Trump further said, "Maybe we can have a leader as we had in Venezuela. Maybe we can have a united leadership in Iran."

Speaking to CNBC, President Donald Trump said that the negotiations came from Iran. "I didn't call them, they called me. They wanted to make a deal, and we're ready to make a deal," Trump said.
