American pop singer Brittany Porter has claimed that she was “unknowingly” married to Sultan Muhammad V, the former King of Malaysia and current ruler of Kelantan, after mistaking a nikah ceremony in Oman for an engagement. The singer now says she is seeking a “proper divorce and apology” after discovering that the ceremony was a legally binding Islamic marriage.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Porter met Sultan Muhammad V in New York in January 2024 through mutual friends. What began as a friendly connection soon turned into a whirlwind romance, with the royal flying her and her friends to luxurious destinations across the Middle East and Southeast Asia. “We had this instant chemistry. He was charming, intelligent, and had this cute British accent,” Porter said. “He flew me and my friends all over the world. We stayed in the nicest hotels and he showered us with gifts.”
The turning point came during a trip to Oman in April 2024, where Porter believed she was getting engaged. “They brought an imam, and I did the conversion. I thought it was a cultural pre-wedding ceremony,” she said. “Later, I found out it was a real marriage under Islamic law.”
From Fiancée To Wife To ‘Separated’
Upon her arrival in Malaysia, Porter was given the courtesy title “Che Puan,” which is reserved for non-royal women married to royalty. However, the relationship reportedly began to deteriorate soon after. “All the clothes I brought were not appropriate for Malaysia. We went shopping for new ones, but then he’d complain about how much I spent,” she said. The strain deepened after Porter suffered a miscarriage last year.
By October 2024, the Sultan allegedly stopped communicating with her. Porter said she flew from Los Angeles to Malaysia, and then to Singapore, to confront him, but was unable to reach him. “He wouldn’t answer his door. Later, his butler texted me, apologising,” she recounted.’
Porter said she only later realised the Sultan had referred to their relationship as “separated.” “I’ve gone from thinking I was engaged, to realising I was married, and now separated. But I never received a proper divorce or closure,” she said. “I checked if he had issued talak (Islamic divorce) via text, but there was nothing. I deserve a proper divorce and a proper apology.”
Her social media posts include screenshots of messages, photos from their trips, and images of luxury shopping sprees, private jets, and a caged pride of lions allegedly at the royal residence.

Shock Over Sultan’s First Marriage
Porter said she was shocked to learn from social media that the Sultan remains married to Sultanah Nur Diana Petra, with whom he recently celebrated 15 years of marriage. “He told me they were not together. If I had known I was the second wife, I would have made a different choice,” she said.

The California-born singer, who now performs under the stage name Brook Lynn, said the experience inspired her upcoming music. “The album is about love, loss, and power. I’ve learned never to give my power away again,” she said. Sultan Muhammad V, who abdicated as Malaysia’s king in 2019 following reports of his marriage to Russian model Oksana Voevodina, has not publicly commented on Porter’s claims.
