The United States and Iran are close to finalising a deal to end the war, and an agreement is expected to be announced within hours on Wednesday, according to a report by Al Arabiya, citing sources.

According to the report, work is underway to finalise the text of an agreement between Washington and Tehran.

The report added that Pakistan's army chief Field Marshall Asim Munir may visit Iran on Thursday to announce the final version of the agreement.

Moreover, a new round of negotiation would also be scheduled in Islamabad after the Hajj season.

Trump says talks near final stage

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday also claimed that talks with Iran are near a final stage and that he was giving it a shot while threatening Tehran.

In a strict warning to Tehran, he said that military action remains on the table if the deal is not reached.

"We’re in the final stages of Iran. We’ll see what happens," Trump told reporters at the White House, adding, “Either have a deal, or we’re going to do some things that are a little bit nasty, but hopefully that won’t happen," the US President said.

Proposals fly to either side as rhetoric remains high

Earlier this week, Trump acknowledged that he was close to authorising additional military strikes, but decided against it to give diplomacy more time.

"We're going to give this one shot. I'm in no hurry," he said, adding, "Ideally I’d like to see few people killed, as opposed to a lot. We can do it either way."

Trump's sharp-worded statement drew the ire of Tehran, which accused Washington of preparing the ground for renewed hostilities.

"If aggression against Iran is repeated, the promised regional war will extend beyond the region this time," the Iranian Revolutionary Guards said.

The heightened rhetoric has continued for the past few days, even as both sides exchanged proposals and counter-proposals for peace.
