Sudan Plane Crash: A Ukrainian-made military aircraft crashed in Sudan's city of Omdurman on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 people, including both military personnel and civilians, as reported by AP News. The Antonov aircraft, which was taking off from Wadi Sayidna airbase, north of Omdurman, went down shortly after departure. The Sudanese military confirmed the casualties but did not disclose details regarding the cause of the crash.

According to the Sudanese health ministry, the bodies of the victims were transported to Nau Hospital in Omdurman. Among those injured were five civilians, including two young siblings. The crash also caused destruction in the Karrari district, damaging several residential houses in the area.

A military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the fatalities included senior military officers, such as Maj. Gen. Bahr Ahmed Bahr and Lt. Col. Awad Ayoub, as well as the aircraft's crew. Civilians, including women and children, were also among the dead, with reports stating that five siblings lost their lives in the crash.

Crash Details and Impact

The Antonov plane was reportedly en route to Port Sudan, a strategic city on the Red Sea coast that currently serves as the seat of Sudan’s military-backed government. The aircraft crashed over the Al-Thawra neighbourhood in the Karrari district, triggering loud explosions and thick clouds of smoke and dust over Omdurman. Local residents reported intense sounds of impact, followed by raging fires at the crash site.

Unclear Cause of Crash

The Sudanese military has yet to provide an official explanation for the crash. While technical failures have been cited in previous military aviation incidents, there is no confirmation on whether mechanical issues, pilot error, or external factors contributed to this tragedy. Investigators are expected to conduct a thorough review of the aircraft’s maintenance records and flight data to determine the cause.
