Israel-Iran Conflict: Escalation Enters 8th Day
The viral video comes at a time of increased tensions in the Middle East. The Israel-Iran conflict, which is now in its eighth day, has been marked by intensified airstrikes, drone strikes, and diplomatic threats by world powers. On Thursday, Iran launched a missile that struck the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, reportedly hitting a civilian area. At least five were injured and blazes erupted where the missile landed, as reported by Israel's Channel 12. The Israeli military confirmed it had shot down three Iranian drones in the Dead Sea later that night. On Friday morning, Israel retaliated with over 60 airstrikes in Iran, striking military and industrial infrastructure.
Strikes allegedly extended as far north as Rasht, a Caspian Sea city in the north, where civilians were warned by Israeli troops to vacate. It is uncertain how extensive the evacuation of civilians is, given Iran's internet shutdown. Strikes reportedly reached as far as Rasht, a northern city on the Caspian Sea, where Israeli forces had warned civilians to evacuate. Due to Iran’s internet blackout, the extent of civilian evacuation remains unclear. Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz retaliated against Iran's previous missile strike on Soroka Medical Centre in Beersheba by directly threatening Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying, "This man absolutely should not continue to exist." According to a Washington-based Iranian human rights group, 657 people have been killed in Iran, including 263 civilians, since the war began on June 13. Over 2,000 others are reported injured. Israel has sustained 24 deaths and hundreds of injuries, despite its multi-layered air defence intercepting the majority of Iran’s 1,000 drones and 450 missiles launched so far. The war has renewed nuclear escalation fears in the region.
