US President Donald Trump has revealed that American forces used a classified weapon he dubbed the “Discombobulator” during the January 3 raid that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. Though Trump declined to describe the technology in detail, repeatedly saying “I’m not allowed to talk about it”, he claimed it played a decisive role in disabling Venezuelan defences and ensuring the operation unfolded without any American casualties.
Speaking to The New York Post, Trump said the mysterious device rendered enemy systems inoperable just as US helicopters swooped into Caracas. “They never got their rockets off,” he said, adding that Venezuelan forces, equipped with Russian and Chinese weaponry, were left unable to respond as planned.

While precise details remain classified and unverified, Trump suggested the Discombobulator effectively shut down Venezuelan electrical and military equipment at the critical moment of the assault. This claim comes amid broader reporting that Venezuelan defence systems experienced abrupt failures during the raid.
Some eyewitness accounts and social media posts, though unconfirmed, described effects resembling a powerful sonic or pulsed-energy wave that left guards disoriented and physically incapacitated, with symptoms including nosebleeds and nausea. These descriptions drew comparisons to reports of “Havana Syndrome,” a mysterious set of neurological symptoms experienced by some US personnel in recent years.

Experts caution that there is no publicly acknowledged US weapon officially named the Discombobulator, and Trump may have been referring loosely to a suite of technologies rather than a single device. Open-source reporting suggests US forces routinely use cyber tools, electronic warfare systems, and acoustic technologies to disrupt enemy communications and sensor networks, though concrete evidence tying these to the device Trump named is lacking.
The operation in Caracas, part of a broader US campaign known as Operation Absolute Resolve, combined airborne assaults, cyber and electronic disruption, and special operations forces to capture Maduro, who has since been brought to the US to face federal narcotics and weapons charges.
