President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were rushed out of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner by Secret Service agents on Saturday night after loud bangs were heard. About an hour after Trump was rushed from the event, he posted on Truth Social that a "shooter had been apprehended." "Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job," Trump added.
What happened during White House Correspondents Dinner event?
A man armed with a shotgun fired at a Secret Service agent, an FBI official told Reuters. The agent was hit in an area covered by protective gear and not harmed, the official said.
The city’s Metropolitan Police Department posted a social message that said its officers are at the scene and coordinating with federal law enforcement. “We will provide updated information once confirmed,” the message said.
Trump's first reaction
"Quite an evening in D.C. Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been apprehended, and I have recommended that we “LET THE SHOW GO ON” but, will entirely be guided by Law Enforcement. They will make a decision shortly. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be much different than planned, and we’ll just, plain, have to do it again," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
"Law Enforcement has requested that we leave the premises, consistent with protocol, which we will do, immediately. I will be giving a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House Press Briefing Room. The First Lady, plus the Vice President, and all Cabinet members, are in perfect condition," Trump said in a second post. "We will be speaking to you in a half an hour. I have spoken with all the representatives in charge of the event, and we will be rescheduling within 30 days," he added.
Trump is safe
Trump was reported uninjured and other top leaders of the United States were evacuated from an annual dinner of White House correspondents on Saturday night after an unspecified threat.
There did not immediately appear to be any injuries, and one law-enforcement official said a shooter opened fire.

What Secret Service said on White House Shooting incident
The Secret Service and other authorities swarmed the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton as guests ducked under tables by the hundreds. "Out of the way, sir!" someone yelled. Others yelled to duck.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro posted a short video from the hotel after the incident, saying, "I have been taken out of the ballroom after the sound of the shots fired. The Secret Service is now in charge of this building, this hotel. I just spoke to Mayor Muriel Bowser. She is on her way, and (Police) Chief Jeffery Carroll is on his way. He will be in charge as soon as he gets here."
