A New Zealand media outlet disclosed Baltej Singh, the mastermind of the nation's biggest methamphetamine seizure. The intriguing part about the drug racket's kingpin is that he is the nephew of Satwant Singh, one of the key assassins of India's former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.

The media house, named Stuff, published a detailed report on how Singh migrated from Punjab to New Zealand and later emerged as an integral part of transnational drug trafficking.

The consignment involved NZ$180 million (Rs 180 crore) and involved 100 kg of meth concealed inside pressure cookers shipped from the UK. Later, the officials carried out raids in Whangārei in January 2026.

Why Did Court Decide To Reveal His Identity?

A High Court earlier ruled to keep Singh's controversial identity as a secret, citing safety concerns for his family owing to his past and the increasing risk of his drug networks.

However, the courts did not agree to his bid of hiding his identity, emphasising that the principle of open justice outweighed these issues. It also noted that Singh's identity was already known to people internationally.

According to New Zealand law, one has the right to hide their identity from media only when they are domestically known. Once their identity gets spread outside the territory, he/she loses the right of name suppression.

When Singh withdrew the appeal, it marked the end of a long-awaited legal battle.

What Did The Investigators Find?

Upon conducting an investigation, it was discovered that Singh orchestrated a highly sophisticated drug smuggling network, importing over 700 kilograms of methamphetamine—much of it in liquid form—concealed within everyday consumer goods.

The shipments carrying the expensive consignments were covered as beverages, kombucha and even coconut water and beer cans,

The smuggling came to light after a 21-year-old man died in 2023, who unknowingly consumed meth-laced liquid from one such container. This prompted a large-scale investigation that led authorities to a storage facility in Auckland, where the bulk of the drugs was seized.

Following the incident Singh was arrested at Auckland Airport while attempting to leave for Dubai and was sentenced to 22 years of incarceration. A co-accused, who distributed the contaminated product, was convicted of manslaughter and received a similar sentence.
